Projects involved with: The delivery of new Gorilla¬ precision flat glass compositions and raw materials for Gorilla¬ melting and forming manufacturing systems from R&D into manufacturing.

Role within the Organization:

  1. You will support the Gorilla¬ Glass division in the Glass Technology area. This role has a high focus involving raw materials and glass materials for use in current and new Gorilla¬ glasses and processes. A key part of the role will be to assess raw materials and glass composition materials and related process systems gaps. The individual would be required to work with upstream areas of batch and autofill as well as melting, forming and Bottom of Draw (BOD). The individual will also work closely with Gorilla¬ Glass Product Engineering to assure the glass is compatible with and meets downstream processor & customer and attributes. The individual would identify gaps in raw material and glass composition equipment and process systems. The individual will help to provide recommendations and facilitate the delivery of new Gorilla¬ Glass compositions, equipment and process systems from R&D through Division Engineering to Manufacturing.

  2. Engage with Development and Engineering divisions on resources for new materials for compositions and processes required in melting, Fusion Forming and BOD technology for existing and new Gorilla¬ glass compositions. Identify gaps in process systems materials compatibility including batching, autofill, melting, forming and BOD processes. Materials interactions would be looked at for glasses, refractories and metals.

  3. Facilitate the communication between the Development and Engineering organizations to enable cost effective growth of new Gorilla¬ glasses.

  4. Champion division initiatives to improve fundamental understanding and problem resolution for materials based problems.

  5. Engage with Manufacturing Plants to resolve issues, establish capability and facilitate production of required products. Participate as needed with internal processes to lead change control for GG.

  6. Support process optimization and technology plans to support and improve the value proposition for new Gorilla¬ glass composition business models.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work with CGT Division Engineering, Gorilla Glass Plants, MTE and Characterization Sciences to develop, implement and migrate glass measurements and equipment to improve precision, accuracy and reliability for Gorilla Glasses as needed.

  • Work with plant glass technologists to evaluate trends in chemistry, physical property and IOX data across glass compositions and locations, investigating for root cause and then proposing action plans to make improvements where necessary.

  • Use engineering principles and data to provide second level assistance to help solve operational issues related to glass technology and raw materials

  • Support and approve experiments with raw materials and glass compositions

  • Collaborate with internal customers, Development, Research, Division Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Mixing, Melting, Forming and Product Engineering for production including new or modified raw materials, raw materials processes and technology

  • Use KT, risk assessment, MEE, DMAIC, Innovation and other tools to deliver results.

  • Provide guidance/training to other personnel on how to perform testing properly

  • Assist in the onboarding, validation and migration of new procedures and gauges through project work and SOP development


Travel Requirements: Estimate up to 25% (mix of domestic and international). Most domestic trips will be one week or less. International trips will typical 3 to 4 times per year and 1 to 2 weeks in length but could be higher depending on project workload.


Hours of work: 45 hrs./week plus travel, and periodic evening or morning conference calls. Because of this there will be flexibility to the work schedule and locations.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in glass or chemistry related field (Ceramic, Materials or Chemical Engineering preferred)

  • M.S. degree preferred. Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 3-5 years in raw materials, glass/ceramic composition control and material lab environment desired.

Required Skills:

  • Validated analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Methodical, data-based decision-making skills with the ability to use this data in enthusiastically finding solutions

  • Understanding of basic statistical and data analysis concepts and their application in manufacturing.

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) Experience with MEE & Six Sigma DMAIC principles

  • Formal K-T problem solving & PPA leadership skills

Desired Skills:

  • Technical curiosity

  • Strong process management skills, such as rigorous application of documented procedures

  • Lab equipment experience (e.g. XRF, ICP, IOX, FTIR, PSD measurements, etc.)

  • Ability to multitask in a rapid change environment

  • Environmental hazard awareness with respect to raw materials and glasses.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
